Naive, Vernacular and Otherwise Unknown - Jim Heimann and Ryan Mungia

Ampersand is pleased to present an evening conversation with Jim Heimann and Ryan Mungia, both of whom work as collectors, cultural anthropologists and historians of popular culture. Heimann, a graphic designer and writer, is Executive Editor at TASCHEN America and an instructor at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. Ryan Mungia is Director and Designer at BOYO Press, an independent publisher based in Los Angles whose recent titles have drawn from Heimann’s large collection of paper ephemera, vernacular photography and printed visual culture. Coinciding with an exhibition of naive drawings from Heimann’s collection at Ampersand, their talk will focus on aspects of collecting original vernacular and naive art, both for one’s personal art collection and for research, inspiration and source material for design work.

This event coincides with Art Conversations, a series of talks about collecting art presented by members of the Portland Art Dealer's Association. Details can be found at
