Undesign: an Evening of Unexpected Results

When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair.
–Sol LeWitt, on how planning is, essentially, a set of strategies.

Thirty collaborators from inside and outside the design community are participating, including preschool students, a Brazilian jujitsu black belt, a barista, a creative director, an adult entertainer, a mini terrarium maker, an art director, a nail artist—and the list goes on.

This project is one part conceptual art, one part systems design, and one part design scratch-and-win. It will navigate knowns and unknowns, embracing the unexpected and pushing constraints.

Participants will design a shirt using only a written list of directions and specifications. No “real designs” will be provided. What the shirt will say, its colors, and how it should be applied are known. The font choice and how the instructions are ultimately interpreted to produce the shirt are unknown. The final shirts will be created by Gen X Clothing on Southeast Powell Boulevard and will be unveiled for the first time the night of the opening. Alongside the shirts, designers from Wieden+Kennedy will create a poster based on the same list of specifications used by participants. The W+K designers’ only instruction is that the poster must contain the original content of the shirt. What they do with it is up to them.

Attendees will also be able to channel their inner conceptual artist and take part in a maker space featuring a similar process with an airbrush artist. There will also be an opportunity to fill out the original forms for a chance to win a version of your own shirt.

Alongside the main exhibition, you can expect:
• Music and DJ
• Musical performance
• Food truck
• Drinks
• Photo booth
• Voting opportunities
• Ephemera and other printed items
• Maker-space activities
