Unparalleled Design Workshops

The University of Oregon's Product Design faculty, students and affiliated professional designers provide free workshops for students of all ages, introducing them to the skills and career possibilities in Oregon in product design. Events take place at the University of Oregon's classroom, workshop, event and exhibition facilities in downtown Portland, OR. The 2018 Unparalleled workshops focus on the design of sports products, including Apparel, Footwear and Equipment.

Sunday, April 15: Sneaker Jam

Draw athletic shoes like a pro footwear designer. Choose your sport: basketball, skateboarding, soccer, running, and learn the tools, views and tricks to design your world-changing new kicks. Take home an amazing set of drawings and the tools used to make them. Our biggest event last year, so make sure you get a seat!

Taught by University of Oregon Sport Product Design Master's students Garett Tolette & Nick Cantrell.

Sports jerseys are t-shirts that have gone through training with extra-amazing textiles and extra-awesome graphics. Choose your sport: basketball, soccer, running, lacrosse, and visually and materially design a t-shirt with an extra-special function. Take home your garment to test it out. Tuesday, April 17: Football v. Fútbol

Different sports, different movements on the fields, and different players with different jobs. But everyone needs cleats to make the jobs, the movements, the sports effective and efficient. Design, 3D print and test cleats to achieve peak performance for a final Football v. Fútbol battle.

Taught by University of Oregon Sport Product Design Master's students Matthew Wilkins & Kevin Hawkins.

Wednesday, April 18: Sport, Meet Fashion

Justin Timberlake's togs at Superbowl LII embodied the mashup of Oregon sports with high pop culture fashion. Design your own sport/fashion mashup learn the proportions, tools and layouts to show your fashion ferocity. Take home the tools to develop your designs for the next superstar performance.

Sorel is sharing their textile collection and their history of sport meeting fashion in this workshop.

Thursday, April 19: Sports Product Trivia Night

You know the athletes, you know the teams—but do you know the products that they rely on to bring home the gold? Come test your knowledge of sports products and how they've influenced sports, society and culture. Categories include: Sneakerhead, Olympics, Regulation-breakers, and pre-Pre History.

High school competitors through Masters professionals are invited.

Your charming and knowledgeable hosts are the incomparable Matty Merrill and Alex Hill, who day-job with adidas, inc.

Saturday, April 21: Biomechanics, My Mechanics

Personal biomechanical testing and analysis is now possible for everyone. Measure your own foot pressure, and compare everyday walking and shoes to what you do in performance running. Take home your own personal analysis to use for your walking, training and shoe-purchasing.

Taught by University of Oregon Sport Product Design Master's students Sandeep Chandrasekhar & Cherry Chan.

Register for free if you're a student, and bring your student ID. If you're not a student anymore, your registration fee will be used to promote how awesome design is to other students.

At every workshop we'll feed you so your brain and your work are extra-sharp.

You will also have access to our Size North America body scanning research. Struggle to find clothes that actually fit you? Tired of returning clothes you buy on-line? Wish the seat in your car was more comfortable? Would you love to have more leg room in airplanes? Participate in Size North America. Size North America is a project aimed at finding the most current body dimensions of proportions of the North American population. This will be done by surveying more than 17,000 men, women and children in the United States and Canada with the latest body scanning technology. Join us and get measured for a better fit.
