Rediscover the joy of creating something with your hands through a workshop of engaging exercises across different mediums. You’ll jumpstart your creativity with activities that include printmaking, guided meditation, building challenge, and collaborative painting. Tools and materials will be provided so you can play like a kid again and experience creative problem solving to spark original ideas.

In advance of the April 21st workshop, we spoke with event organizer and visual artist Vania Vananina about collaborative design and making room for magic.

DWP: Guided meditation is among the activities that will be available. How have you gone about weaving wellness practice into the creative process?

Vania: During the guided meditation exercise, I encourage participants to release concepts, feelings, thoughts, projects that no longer serve them. We do a breathing exercise to relax the mind and the body. These are great for grounding and focusing. Stretching exercises to alleviate physical and mental stagnation and dancing breaks to increase feel-good hormones and energy!

DWP: How do you recognize when something goes from creative play to the spark of an idea that you can take further?

Vania: I facilitate an environment where participants will discover original ideas within them and find a way to take them to the next level. It's seriously magical how from playing with clay or pom poms people locate resources to grow their creative projects and implement useful and important skills that will help them move forward.

DWP: What examples of collaborative design in art history get you excited?

Vania: I love collaborative design in street art. Bodies of work like JR's "Women Are Heroes" are very special. They just make me stand still and think and feel. Sometimes collaborations are not 50-50 in terms of actual work. Sometimes you just need to inspire the other part to design and create something that will impact a community. The Inside Out Project is also a great example. As their website reads: A global art project transforming messages of personal identity into works of art.

There are also other strategic collaborations that have a creative element but a more technical grasp, like NASA and LEGO. Using LEGOS as an educational tool to inspire kids that could eventually become scientists and help us better understand and shape the world.

These examples, abstract and exact, have an influence on individuals. Individuals that are part of a community and will eventually work in teams at school and jobs and life, promoting communication, diversity and creative problem solving.

I believe that anything is possible. I'm here to create magic and help people make, go, do, create awesome things. I want people to help, support, celebrate each other.

This might be a three hour workshop, but the effect that will have in someone's life might be something for a lifetime.
